The revelation of Johannes 32-piece picture cycle

Form 1989 to 1992, the artist painted the cycle with the help of a grant of the Hanns-Lilje Foundation, Hannover/Germany, and supported by the director of the famous Sprengel Museum of Hannover, Dr. Büchner.

It is a complete cycle of the Revelation of St. John on 32 paintings, black and white and a color stained ink additive, each painting 150x250 cm (including 8 paintings each 300x250 cm).

The artist relies on the descriptions of the biblical text in his artistic adaptation of the themes and images. He follows the chronology of the dramatic story in the first six chapters with its culmination in the 7th chapter and aims at an authentic representation of this difficult, mysterious, and metaphorical text.

By using a special ink technique, developed especially for the execution of this cycle, Gassmann transformed the portrayals of the stories, events, and visions of the biblical text into a photo-like processing of negatives in which the actions transcend all usual dimensions.

The revelation of St. John takes us to the heart of the problem of the relationship between the world history and the history of salvation. It raises the problem very clearly but does not resolve it. Maybe it is for this reason, that the apocalypse of St. John has always challenged painters, as is now the case with Jacques Gassmann with his large paintings that are gripped by a dark excitement.

The revelation of St. John illustrates in powerful pictures the end of history and time. It is this which seems to fascinate the painter, who is trying in particular, to create these points of intersection.
